MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – Google will restrict free Gemini users to its Flash-Lite model starting October 9, 2026. This change affects Gemini Apps used with personal Google accounts, and users without a Google AI subscription will lose access to Flash and Pro after the new model rules come into effect. Google states that this update is part of broader shifts in model availability across its consumer AI plans. The revised access structure was announced in its Gemini Apps support documentation.

Subscribers to Google AI Plus will still have access to Flash-Lite and Flash, but their access to Pro will end. The company has not specified a single public transition date for all AI Plus users, though it indicates that affected customers should expect an email explaining when the new access rules will take effect for their accounts. Customers subscribed to AI Pro and AI Ultra will continue to have access to Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro. The timing of these changes for Plus accounts will depend on the notices sent by Google.
Google describes Flash-Lite as an efficient, fast model designed for routine tasks such as summarization and brainstorming. Flash offers a balance of speed and reasoning, suitable for both simple and more complex requests. Pro remains Google’s most advanced Gemini model, capable of handling demanding tasks like complex mathematics and coding, and it also offers a deeper understanding of text, files, images, and video. Response times for Pro may be longer compared to other Gemini models.
Paid subscriptions maintain broader Gemini access
Users with access to a model can choose low, medium, or high effort levels, which Google says can enhance task completion and yield more detailed answers. However, these settings consume more of a user’s available usage allowance. Additionally, AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers will get access to Deep Think, a feature designed for maximum parallel reasoning on complex tasks, and this option is limited to the two higher-tier subscriptions.
The restrictions starting in October follow earlier changes to Gemini usage limits introduced on May 17, 2026. Google moved Gemini Apps to compute-based limits that refresh every five hours until a weekly quota is reached. Usage calculations take into account prompt complexity, features used, and conversation length. Paid users benefit from higher limits, but premium models and features can deplete these limits more rapidly. Users under 18 experienced these earlier adjustments on July 24.
Subscription tiers influence Gemini usage caps
Currently, Google sets standard usage limits for users without a Google AI plan, with AI Plus providing twice those limits, and AI Pro increasing them to four times the standard. AI Ultra offers either five times or 20 times the AI Pro level, depending on the subscription. Features such as media generation, Deep Research, Pro, extended thinking, and Deep Think can consume larger portions of available usage. The company notes that paid users have access to higher limits than free users.
The October restrictions specifically target Gemini Apps on personal Google accounts, while separate arrangements remain for work or school accounts. Users can manage, upgrade, modify, or cancel Google AI plans via Gemini Apps and Google One. Following the change, free personal accounts will only have access to Flash-Lite instead of Flash and Pro. Google also recommends keeping the Gemini mobile app updated as the new access policies take effect.
